Dental GENI: Human-centered Generative AI for Guided Bone Regeneration in Dental Implants

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds promising applications in the field of dentistry, revolutionising various aspects of patient care, treatment planning, and education. One key application involves the creation of realistic 3D models of dental structures, enabling practitioners to visualise and analyse complex anatomical details with unprecedented precision, particularly for patients who need Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) procedures before dental implant.

Generative AI simulates diverse dental conditions, enabling dentists to explore virtual treatment scenarios, optimize decision-making, and enhance personalized treatment plans for patients. Generative AI has the potential to contribute to innovative solutions such as customized dental implants. Its integration promises to improve efficiency, accuracy, and personalized care in the dental field.

The proposed Dental GENI project, a collaboration between Halmstad University and Region Halland, aims to enhance Swedish innovation in generative AI for digital surgery planning of Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and dental implants. Currently, many GBR processes are manual, requiring high skill and time. Dental GENI seeks to automate aspects of this process, allowing dentists to guide the procedure and potentially achieve more consistent quality across different clinics. The project also emphasizes a human-centered AI approach, fostering collaboration between AI systems and dentists to improve patient care, efficiency, and precision in implant surgery planning. Clinician-in-the-loop decision-making supports continuous learning and refinement of AI systems, deepening the understanding of clinical expertise knowledge, and judgment.
