Intercambio: Interventions to promote mental and physical health in changing working environments due to climate change, sustainable work practices, and in green jobs
The INTERCAMBIO project sets out to promote the mental and physical health of workers navigating changing environments with a particular focus on green jobs. The anticipated impact of the project findings are expected to provide valuable support for the development of new policy actions in the field of occupational health.
The INTERCAMBIO project addresses the rapidly changing landscape of European workplaces, spurred by the multifaceted impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the imperative for sustainability outlined in the European Green Deal.
This transformative initiative underscores the heightened awareness of the intricate connections between work, health, and well-being, emphasizing the critical importance of both mental and physical health for workers. Climate change is identified as a pivotal factor shaping the future of work on an unprecedented scale, prompting a comprehensive examination of the evolving workplace dynamics.
Led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, in collaboration with 13 universities including Halmstad University, Lund University, and the Karolinska Institute, the INTERCAMBIO project sets out to promote the mental and physical health of workers navigating changing environments.
With a particular focus on green jobs, the project delves into strategic industries such as outdoor construction, healthcare, public transit, renewable energy, and waste management. The application of diverse multidisciplinary research methods, including large, geographically diverse longitudinal cohort studies, aims to address key research questions and evaluate interventions.
The anticipated impact of the INTERCAMBIO project extends beyond the scientific realm, holding significant societal relevance. As findings emerge, they are expected to provide valuable support for the development of new policy actions in the field of occupational health. The project's holistic approach, engagement with stakeholders, and emphasis on sustainability align with broader efforts to create inclusive green economies that prioritize social protection and the creation of decent green jobs.
