Remote teaching and learning of Swedish as a second language classroom
The utilisation of digital platforms has become more prevalent in remote education, with evidence indicating significant challenges for both teachers and students in digital communication. This doctoral research project seeks to explore the experiences of teachers and students with remote teaching and learning and its impact on the acquisition of Swedish as a second language.
The use of digital platforms is increasingly used in remote teaching, despite research showing that digital communication can pose major challenges for teachers and students. Teachers and students are affected by the use of remote learning due to the increasing challenges that arise when communicating at a distance via digital technology platforms.
According to previous research, the challenges can be divided into three themes:
- Interaction between teachers and students
- Digital competence
- Course design
This project aims to investigate teachers’ and students’ experiences of online remote learning and how this type of teaching affects students’ learning of Swedish as a second language. The study focuses on how teachers manage and design their teaching to promote student learning and how different forms of interaction contribute to student learning online. The study also focuses on what opportunities and challenges teachers experience with teaching. The students’ experiences are also studied in terms of how online teaching creates conditions for interaction, participation, motivation and commitment. By doing so, this research can contribute to a better understanding of how remote teaching can contribute to a better learning of Swedish as a second language.
It is worth noting that with this aim, learning will not be assessed as a result of using online teaching, but rather, the aim is to investigate how teachers and students experience remote online teaching and learning supported by digital technology platforms.
