Ongoing research project: In the eye of the beholder? Defining and understanding multipolarity in the 21st century funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond
My main research focus in 2024 is the Swedish NATO debate and the narratives that have dominated it. I am interested in what the space for dissent has looked like in the media and who has been most prominent as experts in the crisis situation that has arisen as a consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Not least, I am interested in how the new Swedish defence policy has changed as a consequence of the war and how it is linked to the US conflict perception and strategies for meeting these. The results will be published as a chapter in an anthology in October 2024 and later as a scientific article.
In 2023, I published a new book on the evolution of US foreign and security policy - "The Illusion of American Peace", co-authored with Trita Parsi (Washington DC), in which we discuss the costs and effects of the US war on terror, both for international (in)security and for domestic political developments in the US. As a follow-up to the book, I have applied for and received research initiative funding from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond to organise an international conference this autumn together with researchers from Stockholm University and the Department of Foreign Affairs. The conference, which will result in a publication of the participants' conference contributions, is entitled "In the eye of the beholder - Defining and understanding multipolarity in the 21st century".
I teach in the political science program on the American political system, the role of the United States in the world and in political communication, political influence and lobbying. I also supervise bachelor theses and a PhD student.
I am regularly hired as an expert in the Swedish media on issues related to the US and developments there. Since May 2024, I run a podcast "USA & Co" in which I discuss current and less current but central issues related to American politics and social development.
