Entry requirements

Basic Perspectives in Nursing: Man, Health, Society and Nursing 15 credits, Anatomy and Physiology to Support Nursing 15 credits, Health Processes in Nursing 7.5 credits, Nursing and Pharmacology including Practice 15 credits, Specific Ill-health Conditions in a Life Cycle Perspective 7.5 credits of 15 credits, Nursing Care in Relation to Health and Ill Health in a Life Cycle Perspective 7.5 credits of 15 credits. Exemption of the requirement in Swedish is granted. English 6.

Placement in the Academic System

The course is included in the Nursing Programme 180 credits. The course is also offered to exchange students from the university’s partnerships.

Objectives

The overall course objective is that the student develops international perspectives on knowledge, skills and approaches in nursing by identifying variations in health and ill-health in home countries as well as host countries. From the starting point of the host country’s context, health and ill-health among population groups (age included) and social contexts will be problematized. Furthermore, the objective is that the student will reflect on global health challenges and the individual rights to health from a gender and equality perspective.



Knowledge and understanding

  • identify variations in population’s health and ill-health in host country
  • report on specific health problems in the specific host country and discuss how they can be prevented and remediated.
  • describe different care contexts in host country and relate to home country.


Skills and ability

  • from the individual/family’s health issues, identify the need for nursing care, and suggest a nursing care and evaluation plan
  • arrange an oral information opportunity in connection with field studies.


Judgement and approach

  • reflect upon global health challenges and the individual rights from a gender, equality and sustainability perspective.
  • identify the need for further knowledge, and reflect upon nursing in an international perspective for the forthcoming professional role

Content

The course addresses issues of health and ill-health from an international perspective. The student will be part in situations in nursing in different care contexts with the meetings of individuals and families from different cultural contexts. The course discusses health issues within and in between countries. Agenda 2030 and the rights to health will be addressed. The profession of nurses in the host country and home country is problematized.

Language of Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English.

Teaching Formats

The teaching consists of field studies, lectures and seminars with or without information and communication technology. The pedagogy is based on the collaboration between the theoretical and practical teaching and presumes a high level of the student’s activity and responsibility for its learning. Field studies will be carried out in different care contexts and establishments in Sweden as well as in another country. Agreements will be signed between this establishment and Halmstad University.

Examination formats


The examination consists of field studies in another country, a written assignment, digital seminars and an oral information presentation.

Exceptions from the specified examination format

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.
