Main field of study with advanced study

Excercise Biomedicine, First cycle, has less than 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements. (G1F)

Entry requirements

The course Anatomy and Physiology 15 credits. Exemption of the requirement in Swedish is granted. English 6.

Placement in the Academic System

The course is included in the programme Biomedicine - Exercise Physiology. The course is given as a single subject course.

Objectives

The objective of the course is to enable students to develop fundamental knowledge of exercise studies through integration of theory and practice of principles and methods for efficient exercise. The aim is for the students to acquire knowledge of principles, planning and forms of exercise, and methods of exercise and measurement to enable them to develop and evaluate specific exercise designs and programmes from both a health and performance perspective. A further aim is to enable students to discuss different exercise designs and their probable outcomes.

Following successful completion of the course the student should:

Knowledge and understanding

  • account for basic physiological principles, elements and methods of exercise and apply them to different target groups
  • account for differences in exercise design and testing based on different exercise objectives of individuals (and groups)

Skills and ability

  • design exercise programmes for different physical functions that are adapted to different target groups
  • independently conduct and evaluate individual exercise sessions based on fundamental principles of exercise methodology
  • independently conduct a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Judgement and approach

  • assess different types of exercise programmes on the basis of physiological effects and fundamental principles of exercise methodology
  • discuss and assess differences and similarities in exercise designs based on age, gender and training status

Content

The course deals with fundamental knowledge of exercise methodology and exercise perspectives together with suitable methods for testing and measurement. Simple analyses of physiological requirements for different target groups are produced, analysed and reported. Exercise designs are developed on the basis of principles of exercise methodology for the training of different physical functions that can be adapted to different target groups, from untrained to elite athletes.

The course also includes basic training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Language of Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English.

Teaching Formats

Teaching in the course consists of lectures, practical exercises and seminars.

Grading scale

Three-grade scale (UV): Fail (U), Pass (G), Pass with distinction (VG)

Examination formats

The assessment is based on a individual written exam, activity during the practical sessions and a individual practical examination.

2401: Written Examination, 3.5 credits
Three-grade scale (UV): Fail (U), Pass (G), Pass with distinction (VG)

2402: Practical Sessions, 2 credits
Two-grade scale (UG): Fail (U), Pass (G)

2403: Practical Examination, 2 credits
Two-grade scale (UG): Fail (U), Pass (G)

Exceptions from the specified examination format

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.

Course evaluation

Course evaluation is part of the course. This evaluation offers guidance in the future development and planning of the course. Course evaluation is documented and made available to the students.
