General entry requirements (with the exemption of the requirement in Swedish) + English 6.

The course is given as a single subject course.

Objectives

The purpose of the course is for students to develop theoretical and practical skills to successfully implement and lead processes for the development of new products and services by incorporating many experience-based and theoretical-based sessions.


Following successful completion of the course the student should:


Knowledge and understanding

  • Define and describe basic methods, activities and processes used when developing new services and/or goods.


Skills and ability

  • Show a deeper understanding of methods, activities and processes used when development of new services and/or goods
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply methods used for development of a new service and/or good.
  • Demonstrate skills in presenting the re­sults in spoken and written form.


Judgement and approach

  • Demonstrate an ability to reflect on the product development in relation to sustainable development and the global grand challenges.

Content

The course includes five parts which can be considered a chronological order (i.e. the product development process). Each part reflects a specific part in the development process. Each step includes specific methods, work cases and critical assessment regarding the choice of methods for a specific situation.

Furthermore, student reflect on how the sustainability aspects and the United Nations Sustainable Goals can be integrated in the development process. The five steps are:

  • Product development strategy
  • User studies
  • Idea- and concept development
  • Development of criteria, evaluation, and further deve­lopment
  • Visualization and presentation

Language of Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English.

Teaching methodology includes lectures, seminars, and tutoring.

Six-grade scale, letters (FA): Insufficient (F), Sufficient (E), Satisfactory (D), Good (C), Very Good (B), Excellent (A)

Examination formats

Examination is done in an individual written exam and written assigments - a group project, which is presented in written and oral form, as well as individual weekly blogs.

2001: Written Examination, 3.5 credits

2002: Project, 3 credits

Two-grade scale (UG): Fail (U), Pass (G)

Exceptions from the specified examination format

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.
