Entry requirements

Degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry or Geology including an independent project 15 credits or Degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering with an environmental orientation including an independent project 15 credits. The degree must be equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen or Swedish högskoleingenjörsexamen and must have been awarded from an internationally recognised university. The courses Ecological Resilience 7.5 credits and Ecosystem Services in a Changing World 7.5 credits. English 6.

Placement in the Academic System

The course is included within the Master’s Programme (One year) in Applied Environmental Science.

Objectives

Following successful completion of the course the student should be able to:


Knowledge and understanding

  • Explain different types of work tasks and competences required to perform professional work within environmental science.
  • Explain the organisation, the main activities and aim of the work place and how research results within the area is implemented.


Skills and ability

  • Perform tasks that are important for the on-going activities at the work place.
  • Organise and document tasks that are carried out at the work place.
  • In an objective way report the experiences from the internship both orally and in writing.


Judgement and approach

  • Critically reflect on the future role as a professional and show ability to identify the need of further knowledge and developed competence.

Content

It is the student’s responsibility to find a suitable internship before registration. The internship is planed individually for each student in. The student cooperates with a supervisor at the work place and with the course leader in planning the internship.

The internship should correspond to 4 weeks full time work and it is compulsory to be at the place of the internship for at least 20 days.

Language of Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English.

Teaching Formats

The student is responsible to make a plan of the internship together with the supervisor at the work place that can be documented in a schedule or written plan. The plan should give an overview of what tasks the student will take part of and what responsibilities this will include.

The course leader will be available for supervision during the internship. If any problems would occur during the internship the student should contact the course leader.

Grading scale

Two-grade scale (UG): Fail (U), Pass (G)

Examination formats

The examination is based on an oral and a written reporting along with a certificate from the work place where the internship was carried out.

Following a completed practical work placement period, a student who has been awarded a fail grade has the right to a further work placement period.

Exceptions from the specified examination format

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.

Course evaluation is part of the course. This evaluation offers guidance in the future development and planning of the course. Course evaluation is documented and made available to the students.
