General entry requirements (with the exemption of the requirement in Swedish) + English 6.

Placement in the Academic System

The course is to be studied as a single subject course.

Objectives

The aim of the course is that the student acquires basic knowledge of the Swedish language on AI level by Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR. The course deals with modern Swedish with a focus upon the student's understanding and development concerning their ability to speak in Swedish. Emphasis is placed on everyday language and everyday phrases.

Following successful completion of the course the student should:


Knowledge and understanding

  • understand the contents of a simple text in Swedish
  • recite a text in Swedish
  • discuss some aspects of Swedish culture

Skills and ability

  • conduct in a simple conversation in Swedish
  • apply certain Swedish grammatical structures in both speech and writing
  • make oneself understood via simple dialogues in Swedish

Judgement and approach

  • understand and value certain differences in style that can be explained with a sociolinguistic or pragmatic perspective

Content

The course consists of three parts:
1) Glossary, wording and pronunciation
2) Swedish grammar and grammatical structures
3) Sociolinguistic and pragmatic conditions

Language of Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English.

Teaching Formats

The course consists of lectures, seminars and group work exercises.

Six-grade scale, letters (FA): Insufficient (F), Sufficient (E), Satisfactory (D), Good (C), Very Good (B), Excellent (A)

Examination formats

The course is examined by means of a individual written assignment and partly by an oral group assignment.

2301: Oral Proficiency and Pronunciation, 3 credits

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.
