Placement in the Academic System
The course is part of Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Design and Innovation. The course is given as a single subject course.
Objectives
The aim of the course is for the students to apply the global sustainability goals in a product development project and to be able to adapt the product from a sustainability perspective.
Following successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- report on current research in the field of sustainable product development
- explain and reflect on the engineering role in relation to the concept of sustainable development from a product perspective
Skills and ability
- explain how a product development project can be affected from a sustainability perspective
- report their results from the product development project orally and in writing
Judgement and approach
- reflect on product and production specifications from a sustainability perspective
Content
The course covers methodology and analysis linked to product specifications from a sustainability perspective. The course is partly conducted with theory sections in product development and material selection as well as sustainable product development linked to the UN's global sustainability goals.

The course is examined through written and oral reporting of project work in groups.

Four-grade scale, digits (TH): Fail (U), Pass (3), Pass with credit (4), Pass with distinction (5)
Exceptions from the specified examination format
If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.
