He joined Halmstad University as a visiting researcher in 2013, and by 2015, he had become a Professor of Informatics. In the same year, he also took on the role of Program Director for Halmstad University’s Knowledge Foundation Environment – Research for Innovation and developed the PhD program in Informatics.
Professor Bergquist's work is characterized by a strong interest in collaboration and networking. His research often explores the role of culture, norms, values, experiences, and work. He has a background in Ethnology, and he uses ethnography as a tool to understand the studied group from within.
One of the key areas of his research is the consequences of digitalization. He started working on this topic in the mid-1990s, when he was one of the few ethnologists interested in IT. His research in this area includes studying how people collaborate digitally and innovate together with key contributions to our understanding of the open-source model as a way of organizing innovation.
In Halmstad he has contributed to developing the research profile Digital Service Innovation. Within this area he led several projects, such as “Designing Open and Self Organising Mechanisms for Sustainable Mobility as a Service” (OSMaaS) that developed a design framework for mobile services, and "Sharging", a project aimed at investigating the interest and challenges in offering electricity to owners of electric vehicles through a shared platform. He has also done research on the digitalization of healthcare where he has studied digitalization of radiology work. Recent work includes how AI affects radiologists’ decision making, as well as how the introduction of AI in radiology can become more efficient.
