What is an academic ceremony?
The academic ceremony is a European university tradition dating back to medieval times and ancient symbolism. Halmstad University held its first academic ceremony in 1998. Halmstad University is a young university that has created its own traditions and rituals, while remaining true to traditional ceremonies.
At an academic ceremony, academic achievements and merits are celebrated and acknowledged. For instance, the new Vice-Chancellor and new professors are inaugurated into their new tenures, doctors and honorary doctors are conferred. At Halmstad University’s academic ceremony, new associate professors, doctors who work at Halmstad University but were conferred at a different university and new excellent teaching practitioners are celebrated as well. The academic ceremony is also when the Teaching and Learning Prize and the Prize for Collaboration and Innovation are awarded.
Halmstad University celebrated its latest Academic Ceremony on 15 November, 2024. The first was in 1998. Since then, a total of 18 ceremonies have been celebrated.
