Halmstad University is leading the way towards the application of AI in healthcare

Halmstad University is one of the driving forces behind research on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. This becomes clear when AI Sweden publishes its new AI strategy. The University's research on the implementation of AI in healthcare can become a guideline for the development of AI in Sweden.

”In recent years, Halmstad University has become a leader in this area.”

Last week, AI Sweden presented a strategy for how AI should be developed and used in Sweden. The strategy should be seen as a fundamental analysis and strategic support for decision-makers in different sectors. The idea is that the strategy will act as a guide for politicians, business leaders, decision-makers, civil servants and change managers. The strategy places great emphasis on large-scale implementation of AI, not least in healthcare – an area in which Halmstad University is a leader.

“The strategy highlights the importance of adopting, adapting and utilising the capabilities that come with AI. Halmstad University's role as a creator and disseminator of this knowledge is therefore important,” says Markus Lingman, Chief Physician and Strategist at Region Halland and Adjunct Professor at Halmstad University, who has been involved in the development of the strategy.

”We are at the forefront”

Halmstad University currently accounts for a significant part of the research in Sweden in the field of AI in healthcare – especially when it comes to implementation and application.

“It is true that we are at the forefront of research on the implementation of AI in healthcare. Previously, research has mainly focused on the development, validation and evaluation of AI applications, but as technological advances have evolved, expectations have increased to develop more knowledge and methods to support implementation in practice, and here Halmstad University has taken a leading role,” says Jens Nygren.

Close collaboration with the healthcare sector

Jens Nygren believes that one of the things that distinguishes the University's research is that it has valued collaboration and development concerning methods and support for implementation to promote more evidence-based and systematic approaches.

“To succeed, new methods that are adapted to the specific challenges associated with the introduction and use of AI in healthcare are required, and they need to include trust, transparency and ethical implications,” says Jens Nygren.

Central to the University's research is also the collaboration with various stakeholders in business and healthcare.

“By contributing to a holistic and collaborative approach to implementation, we can contribute to significant progress in realising the potential of AI in healthcare,” says Jens Nygren, adding:

“This way, we can also be involved in setting the standard for future research.”
