Objectives

After completing the course, the students are expected to understand the political, social, economic and cultural processes and events that has characterized Scandinavian societies from 1500 to the present. The main aim is to further understanding by highlighting and problematizing processes and events that illuminates societal and cultural continuity and change in order to distinguish between different national paths of development.


Following successful completion of the course the student should be able to:


Knowledge and understanding

  • summary give an account of Scandinavian history and societal development from 1500 to the present
  • summary give an account of homogeneous and divergent political, social, economic and cultural processes and events that characterized the Scandinavian societies from 1500 to the present


Skills and ability

  • summary discuss and explain relations between political, social, economic and cultural processes and events that characterized the Scandinavian societies


Judgement and approach

  • summary compare, discuss and reflect on similarities and differences between the development of important political, social, economic and cultural processes, patterns and events in the Nordic countries
  • summary relate to and reflect on Scandinavian history, cultural and societal development in relationship to the social and cultural frame of reference of the student

Content

The course focus societal development and the rise of Nation states in Scandinavia from 1500 to the present. Important social, economic and cultural modes of continuation and change, such as the role of language, emigration to America, the consequences of the industrialization process, the rise of the modern welfare state, changing gender relations and the multi-cultural society of today, are noticed as well as the formation of nations and empires and inter-Scandinavian relations from an allembracing European perspective.

Language of Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English.

The course consists of lectures, seminars and excursions.

Examination formats

There are three written assignments that together form the examination.

Exceptions from the specified examination format

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination format and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be study support for students with disabilities.
