This lecture aims to provide a historical perspective to the research field of surface metrology, from thumbnails and analogue stylus instruments to advanced 3D surface measurement technologies and today's advances in artificial intelligence. Surface metrology is now essential in various industries today, where surface quality affects the performance and reliability of products, but is its full potential being realised?

Sabina Rebeggiani's research focuses on surface characterisation and the correlation between material, manufacturing, and surface quality. She will give examples of research that has been done, but more importantly what is done today and what might be done in the future.
