Min forskning handlar om hur naturen förändras över tiden, där mänskligt genererade processer (bl.a. klimatförändringar, skogsbruk, jordbruk...) samverkar med naturliga variationer. Jag använder insektsgruppen trollsländor som modellorganism där art- och individantal i olika områden ger underlagsdata.
Ett pågående projekt är hur hela artsamhällen påverkas vid försurning, uppvärmning och brunifiering i sjöar och våtmarker i södra och mellersta Sverige. Detta ökar förståelsen för hur arter koloniserar olika miljöer och vilka faktorer som driver (åter)kolonisering och utdöende. Ett liknande projekt pågår i södra Brasilien där faktorer som driver artsammansättningen och överlevnaden hos arter i vattensamlingar på pampas undersöks tillsammans med lokala forskare.
Ett andra projekt som är ett samarbete med amerikanska forskare handlar om hur extremt nordliga arter är anpassade till värme och köld. Då övergångarna mellan sommar och vinter sker mycket snabbare i norr kan dessa arter vara genetiskt predisponerade att klara snabba klimatsvängningar och därmed ha en bättre förutsättning att klara den pågående uppvärmningen av planeten.
Jag är medlem i expertkommittén för limniska evertebrater för den svenska rödlistan samt aktiv i rödlistning av trollsländor på europeisk och global nivå.
