- Leap for Life – pioneers in healthcare
Speaker: Magnus Clarin, Dean of School of Information Technology, Halmstad University
Content: Leap for Life is Hallands collaborative effort with information-driven care. It is an innovation centre (former Centre for Health Technology Halland) for Region Halland, Halmstad University, all municipalities in Halland and the business sector in their joint quest to change and develop the future healthcare.

Content: The CareWare Nordic cooperation between TUCV and former Hälsoteknikcentrum Halland, now Leap for Life has resulted in a method where welfare technology companies meet healthcare professionals in both Sweden and Denmark in order to further develop new products and services that fit the needs and organisational set-up at the receiving end.

About the conference
The main challenges of the Swedish healthcare system today are to maintain and increase quality of care while meeting increasing demands on healthcare delivery. To resolve this, efficiency has to increase to control costs and a more proactive personalized care be deployed. The Swedish healthcare system is looking into artificial intelligence (AI) and information driven care as an emerging technology to address these challenges and increase value for patients.
Succeeding with transformation towards more information driven care depends on development of data and information systems and models for how the potential of AI can be realised in practice. This includes aspects on how AI innovations can be understood as interventions within the dynamic and complex environment of health systems and the implications for design, use and evaluation to increase chances of successful implementation and improved patient and population outcomes.
During this conference, we want to share the current development of information driven care in the health innovation ecosystem in Halland and the steps we continue to take to push progress in the fields of implementation of information driven care.

Philip is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School Department of Emergency Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has a background as a researcher within Emergency Medicine and he is working as Director of International Collaborations at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He has for years had a fruitful collaboration with Region Halland and Halmstad University that has resulted in a completely unique structure for processing data. This forms the basis to create new insights and tailor-made activities to improve and innovate around the patient.
Peter W. Astrup
Peter is a Centre Manager at Test and Development Centre in Viborg, Denmark and has a degree in Political science from Aarhus University and has a background as an Innovation Consultant at Region Midjylland, where his focus was to develop the health care through a wider collaboration between the hospital, general practice and the municipality and with the help of welfare technology. As a Centre Manager at TUCV he is working in the field between product development, private business and the public sector with the goal to create strong relationships and value for both the citizens, businesses and the professionals in the public sector. Together with the other project partners in CareWare Nordic Peter is working with spreading good practices within welfare technology between Denmark and Sweden.
James is a Guest Professor and a Bennett Professor at Halmstad University, as well as a Professor of Technology and Innovation Management (Healthcare) at Imperial College Business School since 2003. He is an Associate Director of research for Imperial College Health Partners, a member of the management team for the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Policy Innovation and Evaluation Research Unit, and an associate of the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) Northwest London. He is also President of the International Academy for Design and Health.
His research, teaching and consultancy focuses on the innovation processes in health care systems. As well as researching and teaching, he advises and consults for government, health care services and industry. He has worked with companies from the medical technology, pharmaceutical, information and communications technology and construction sectors in many countries.
Magnus has a PhD. in Physics and is the Dean for the School of Information Technology at Halmstad University. He has long experience in setting up and running projects between academia, industry, and the public sector. In 2009 he started the Centre for Health Technology Halland (HCH) as a collaboration arena for healthcare innovations. His current focus is on supporting the development of the transition towards information-driven healthcare, particularly on AI and Data Factory, as methods for this.
Markus in an MD, PhD. Chief strategy officer at Halland hospital group and senior consulting cardiologist. He has a background in cardiovascular research and clinical work as a senior consulting cardiologist. The last decade he has had managing positions in healthcare including head of division covering emergency care and internal medicine specialties. Over the last years his research has focused on AI applied in healthcare in addition to his interest in the benefits of integrated care systems unleashing the power in data to leverage information driven care development.
Jens is a Professor of Health Innovation and Programme Manager of the profile area Health Innovation at Halmstad University. During the last 10 years, he has focused on developing multidisciplinary health science research on young people’s mental health and on developing innovative digital services and health promotion interventions to resolve issues around support and participation in young people’s care.
The research is innovation-driven and links research questions and projects that relate to the different phases of the innovation process; needs, orientation, design, development and testing, implementation and evaluation as well as dissemination and commercialisation. Projects are primarily run in collaborations between researchers, target groups, practitioners and community actors in the public and private sectors to secure high level of application in clinical practice.
Mattias has a Ph.D. in theoretical physics and is a Professor of Information Technology at Halmstad University. He is also a Professor in Theoretical Physics at Lund University, with a specialisation in machine learning for medical diagnostics. Today, he heads the information-driven healthcare research within Halmstad University’s Centre for Applied Intelligent Systems Research (CAISR). Mattias research interests are centred around machine learning and applications within the healthcare domain. One topic of particular interest is explainable AI, i.e., the challenge of opening up the black-box nature of advanced machine learning algorithms, an area of utmost importance for healthcare applications.
Julie is a Guest Professor at Halmstad University and former Deputy Director and Academic Lead for the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) Northwest London. Julie is a self-confessed ‘critical optimist’. She believes that things really can be better than they currently are, but that we are not going to make progress by glossing over the challenges we face. She believes to move forward we must critically examine these problems and uncomfortable truths. Julie’s willingness to tackle such challenges has been the foundation of the major successes of her career, for example: shining light on the reality of using quality improvement methods in healthcare.
Julie transitioned into healthcare in 2006, following completion of her PhD in chemistry, and brought with her a fresh perspective and a whole host of “stupid questions”. In 2008 Julie co-founded an innovative hybrid organisation (NIHR CLAHRC NWL) which has brought together academics, healthcare practitioners, and patients to work collaboratively with a shared purpose: improving health and care.
Petra is a Professor of Nursing and Director at the Center for Research on Welfare, Health and Sport (CVHI) at Halmstad University. She has a research interest in the promotion of children’s mental health, children’s participation in healthcare and quality improvements in healthcare. Over the last years her research has focused on developing and implementing health promoting (digital) services and interventions in co-production with users and stakeholders.
Now, she is also working with a research project that investigates how existing knowledge from implementation and improvement research can be mobilised to increase the success of AI implementation initiatives in health care. She is also a member of the steering group at Center for Evidence-based Psychosocial Interventions (CEPI) at Lund University.
Peter is an Innovation Strategist at Region Halland and Business coordinator at Centre for Health Technology Halland (HCH) and has a background as a development engineer and has run his own company in product development and design. Peter has long experience of incubator activities and business development and through his roles at Region Halland and HCH he has an important coordinating function to increase collaboration between companies, the region and Halmstad University. Peter also works actively with collaboration with our neighboring countries. Through the collaboration with TUCV, Peter Uppman and Peter Astrup have developed the concept of Springboad, which enables companies to obtain sparring of end users in both Sweden and Denmark.
Pontus Wärnestål (moderator)
Pontus is an Associate Professor of Informatics at the School of Information Technology at Halmstad University, and he has been involved in several research projects in the intersection of digital transformation and health innovation. His current focus is on developing design resources and education programmes in the intersection of Service Design and Artificial Intelligence. Pontus also works as Director of Human-Centred AI at the design agency inUse.
