Deferment of studies
If you are admitted to a programme or course but cannot begin studying, you can apply to begin the studies during the next admission round. This is called deferment of studies. Deferment of studies is normally only granted if you have special reasons, i.e. if you cannot personally influence the circumstances.
Examples of special reasons for deferment are as follows:
- Social reasons
- Medical reasons
- Parental leave
- Military or civilian service
- Student union assignments
- Deferred leave according to the Employee’s right to Educational Leave Act (1974:981)
Deferment of studies cannot be granted for reasons concerning accommodation or your current economic situation. Students who are required to pay tuition fees have to pay the first installment of tuition before applying for deferment. If your application for deferment is denied, the payment will be refunded. If the deferment is granted, the fee will be transferred to to the semester when you start your studies.
How to apply for deferment of studies
State your reasons in your application and remember to attach supporting documents substantiating your reasons. You may defer your studies for at most 18 months, unless there are special reasons for a longer time period. If you are admitted as a reserve, you cannot be granted deferment of studies. You apply by email.
Note that the deferment is not granted before you have received a written decision from the University’s admissions department. If you have been granted deferment, before starting studies, you must always apply and register for the same programme option on university admissions no later than the last registration date. You must also upload the decision of deferment on University admissions. Further instructions are found in your decision.
