Credit transfer

If you have studied courses at Halmstad University or at other Swedish or foreign universities/colleges that correspond to any or some of the courses or parts of courses within your current studies, you can apply to have these courses credited. Other types of education or training, as well as work experience, may also count as prior learning that can be converted into higher education credits.

Before you apply

To apply for credit transfer, you must be a student, admitted, and actively engaged in education at Halmstad University. Being actively engaged in education means that you are registered and enrolled in a programme or at least one course at Halmstad University. However, you do not need to be registered in the course you wish to have credited. Your application will be processed in chronological order, and the processing time is typically two months. Please remember to apply well in advance.

  • The first thing you should do is to find the syllabus for the course that you wish to replace. Go through the objectives and the content of the course and compare them with your knowledge and skills.
  • Your previous studies, courses or parts of courses, and modules, must have been completed, i.e. you must have obtained a pass mark.
  • If your application for credit transfer is approved, it may affect your student grant from CSN. As a student, you are responsible for notifying CSN of any changes in your study situation.

When do you not need to apply for credit transfer

If you have completed courses from a recognised Swedish higher education institution and your planned degree has room for elective courses. You choose which elective courses you want to include when you apply for your degree.

How to apply

When you apply for credit transfer, the objectives, content, and scope of your previous studies experience will be assessed relative to the relevant course at Halmstad University. This means that it is important that you provide correct documentation of these aspects when you apply.

The application for credit transfer is made by logging in to Ladok for students. When you have logged in, select credit transfer in the menu and read the instructions carefully before proceeding to apply.

Application decision

Once you have submitted a complete application, the turnaround time is approximately two months. When a decision has been made, it will be added to your credit transfer case. You will automatically receive an email from Ladok informing you that you can view your decision in Ladok for students.

If you do not send all the necessary documents, your application will be processed as it stands and may be rejected. It is your responsibility as a student to ensure that your application is complete.

Approval, partial rejection, and rejection

There are three possible outcomes, which you can read more about below. You can follow your credit transfer case via Ladok for students and read the decision.

Approval/Authorised

Approval means that your application has been fully approved. In addition to the decision, the decision notification will also include information about which of your previous studies/work experience served as the basis for the decision.

Partial rejection

If only part of your application has been approved, you will have a partial rejection. The decision notification will then include information about which part has been approved, how many credits you have been awarded, and an explanation as to why the remaining part could not be converted/transferred.

Rejection

If you receive a rejection, it means that no part of your application could be approved, either in full or in part.

Appeals

If you disagree with the decision you have received, you may appeal to the Higher Education Appeals Board. Your appeal must be in writing. In the letter, you must state which decision is being appealed (case number), the change in the decision that you are requesting, and why the change is being requested. The appeal should be addressed to the Higher Education Appeals Board but sent to Halmstad University. The letter must be received by the Registrator at Halmstad University, Box 823, 301 18 Halmstad, within three weeks from the day you received the decision.
