AI in your studies
AI tools can be useful and helpful in your studies, but it is important that you use them in an authorised and safe way. On this page you can read about the rules for using AI in your studies.

AI as a tool in your studies
AI tools can be a valuable resource in your studies. If used wisely and responsibly, the tools can be very helpful in understanding complex information and providing you with new skills.
For example, you can use the tools to:
- Get feedback on your writing, in both language and content.
- Summarise books and texts.
- Get new programming code or correct code that you wrote.
- Get new ideas.
- Get clarification of concepts.
- Get inspiration as an opponent.
The list is just a few examples of how you can use AI tools.
AI in examinations at the University
As a general rule, you are not allowed to use AI tools in examinations in your studies at the University, unless it is stated in the course description or in the instructions that it is a permitted aid. In many cases, the tools do not allow you to develop the skills you need after the programme, and it is often not possible to assess what you know.
For a task to be considered completed by you, you need to do the work independently. Therefore, plagiarism or having someone else do the assignment is not allowed. This applies to both other people and AI tools, which carry out the task without you processing it to the extent that it becomes your own independent work.
Keep in mind the rules for cheating and plagiarism
If you use AI tools in an examination where it is not allowed, it is against Halmstad University’s disciplinary rules and is considered cheating. In examinations where AI tools are allowed, you need to be aware of the rules for plagiarism. You should never include ideas or statements that are not your own without clearly indicating the sources used.
Keep in mind that AI tools only generate information and are not the actual source. It cannot be assumed that text and data produced by the tools are accurate or relevant. Important or crucial information can also be excluded without good reason. Texts created may contain false claims that are constructed to fulfil what has been requested.
Ask the examiner or programme director for advice
As a student, you are always responsible for what you submit for examination, regardless of the tools you have used. It is therefore important that you carefully check the content and the sources cited.
If you are unsure about the rules for the use of AI in an assignment, you can ask for guidance from the examiner in charge of the course or from your programme director.
