Legitimation of Newness and Its Impact on EU Agenda for Change – LNETN

The project Legitimation of Newness and Its Impact on EU Agenda for Change – LNETN in short (Legitimation of Newness – European Training Networks) addresses the urgent need for new legitimation perspectives, theories, approaches and methods to learn and know how best to interpret and respond to newness, committing to and ensuring a positive social impact.

Focus will be on interpreting and understanding complex phenomena in ways which will transform effective decision making and policy implementation and contribute to economic development.

Jackson Wanjiku

Jackson Wanjiku's project will aim to investigate how new Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) legitimate themselves after entering in a new Industry. The research will focus on the management consulting industry in Kenya that is fairly new. New institutions or ventures not only have an uphill task when seeking to legitimate themselves, but also have an uphill task establishing themselves in an industry that is also seeking to gain overall legitimacy.

As the nature of services offered is an integral aspect that might determine the success of the new industries, the research will aim to investigate the nature of services that these SMEs present to their customers and most importantly how they go on to legitimate the services that might be deemed as new to the customers that they target.Research will also aim to find out some of the challenges that might be faced by SMEs as they seek to legitimate themselves.

Having explored that, the research will then aim to find out how the new SMEs in a new industry are able to internationalize and gain legitimacy in a new geographical region. Research will also seek to find out if there are any preferred methods applied by theses SMEs when gaining entry in an international market.

Deniz Dönmez

Deniz Dönmez is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie early stage researcher (ESR 9) within the Legitimation of Newness and Its Impact on Eu Agenda for Change (LNETN) project. My title of the research theme is Styles of Representation of Newness and Change in Creative Industries.

It is aimed to make a contribution to the development of organizational typologies and best practices, revealing new ways to explain how new organizing forms and practices emerge and legitimate, and impact organizations, markets and society. This research also examines how newness and change are described and communicated from the legitimation perspective. Organizations in creative industries are selected for detailed study of their representational practices by which a type of practice or idea is conceptualized and communicated beyond the field of the expertise, exploring the efficacy and consequence of extant and potential methods of representation of innovation and change.

Manoella Antonieta Ramos da Silva

Manoella is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie early stage researcher (ESR 2) within the LNETN project. In her research, Manoella examines how institutional contexts and policies shape and are shaped by the emergence, legitimation and internationalization processes of life science industries (such as medical technology, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology). This includes, but not limited to, international product launch that is a complex endeavor, in scaling up marketing and sales, expensive and difficult clinical trials, regulatory demands, in gaining access to hospitals and doctors, and financing the complete R&D process.

Manoella's research, as part of the 'Legitimation of New Institutions and Policies' research theme, will contribute to the creation of new knowledge in the area of how new institutions and policies shape and are shaped by innovations and new technologies, how new business-policy relationships are created, emerge and are legitimated in various contexts, and the impact of these processes on the economy and polity.

Luiza Stein

Wide participation partnerships between sector NGOs, executives and policy makers in national and local levels in the EU have been seen by many countries to be a highly effective way of informing judgments on policy and legislation. However, there is little knowledge or understanding about the emergence, legitimation, nurturing and safeguarding of such partnerships. The research responds to this issue and focuses on how these new business-policy relationships are created, emerge and are legitimated in the EU context.

Personal:

Luiza is a Brazilian professional and has received a Master's degree in Administration and a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration from the State University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. As a professional Luiza has experience in the development of innovation systems, having worked especially in the coordination of programs to promote and develop new ventures and partnerships in technology-intensive sectors. In her last position, Luiza worked as a consultant for business development focused on entrepreneurship education and mentorship to newborn start-ups.

LNETN is the first European Training Network-project within the Marie Skłodowska–Curie Innovative Training Networks to combine newness, legitimation and theory building to adress the need for training of Early Stage Researchers (ESR) with quadruple-i (inter-disciplinary, inter-sectoral, inter-technology and international) and transferable knowledge, skills and broad vision. The project sets up a unique, innovative training network within social sciences and economics, with applications in science, engineering, technology, health and humanities.

A finger pointing at the text "innovation".

Come join us as a PhD-student in Innovation Sciences at Halmstad University – a creative and innovative university.

LNETN offers 15 Early Stage Researchers positions to begin in September 2020. Four of these will be placed at Halmstad University. The others will be divided between projocet partners; Aalborg University, University of Glasgow and University of Oulu. At Halmstad University, ESRs will be supervised by renowned professors Svante Andersson, Jonas Gabrielsson and Jeaneth Johansson.

Research objectives

  • To link the dimensions of sustainability to the discussion of tomorrow's leadership and organisation, connected to a discussion of qualitative and ethical organisation.
  • To generalise into a widely applicable theory/policy/practice and provide high quality research data on how new industries and ventures gain legitimation.
  • Evaluate innovative structural and operational organisational typologies and identify best practices.
  • Create a substantial, path-breaking direction for studying newness in seemingly opposing social and ethical settings.
