Children, Culture and Aesthetics

7,5 credits

This course is aimed at exploring the significance of arts and culture for children in the early years, particularly how they are relevant for pre-school education. How are children represented in popular culture – in TV-shows, films, children’s books and comic books? What ideas about childhood do they represent, and how do values concerning childhood change through time? How can teachers use media and aesthetics to develop their teaching practice? And how can children use the arts learn from or to express? During the course, we will study changes in culture that lead up to contemporary ideas about childhood and norms placed upon young children in society, as well as changes in the view of what aesthetics is and what it can do. From this we can learn how knowledge about arts and aesthetics helps understanding and promoting the child’s perspective. You will also have opportunity to interact with students in the university’s pre-school education programme and draw from their experiences in Swedish pre-schools.
